Traffic Sign recognition is one of the most important data products on the way to fully digitized roads and therefore a component of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Traffic signs enhance road safety by informing the driver of speed limits, possible dangers such as icy roads, imminent road works or pedestrian crossings. With the "Traffic Signs" product of Mercedes-Benz Data, customers can monitor the state of the traffic sign infrastructure and conduct reviews and improvements digitally driven and efficient.

The Traffic Signs product can provide you with road sign data from the Mercedes-Benz vehicle fleet with drivers assistance packages based on the detection via the camera sensors.
Keep the traffic sign infrastructure updated, including for example speed limits and prohibition or danger signs. Over time you can evaluate the traffic sign quality by creating a traffic sign map.
Road traffic departements, cities and communities can quickly identify inefficient or suddenly stolen traffic signs.
Receive ad-hoc alerts as soon as traffic signs are damaged or even lost and thus prevent areas with a high accident potential.
Functions and features of the Traffic Signs Product
1. Data Collection
Mercedes-Benz vehicles are equipped with a high range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) which support the driver and make the streets safer. This enables us to collect the traffic sign data through detection by the built in vehicle camera sensors. The sensors not only recognize the type, the value and the shape of the road sign but also the heading of the sign and the permanency (e.g. static or LED sign). Furthermore, the exact sign data is extended by the GPS position and the time stamp. The data is then sent over-the-air to the Mercedes-Benz vehicle backend where they are validated and aggregated via our proprietary algorithm.
To deliver result data in the highest accuracy we have developed our own algorithm. We aggregate individual measurements of the Mercedes-Benz vehicle fleet to ensure a high confidence level of our measurements. This aggregation of individual measurements enables us to correct the geo position of traffic signs to provide a high accuracy for the data points. We can then send ad-hoc notifications, if a traffic sign is damaged or even missing.
